Manners at the Table: Device Free Family Meal
Do you sit down with your family for a meal? I am sure this comes as no surprise but those families that sit together have fewer behavior problems, healthier eating habits, improved conversation skills and better grades.
Yes, times have changed but from what we are observing here at Manners To Go, connection and community are paramount.
As an adult looking back on my childhood, my fondest memories are sitting down with my parents for mealtime. My mother was a second grade teacher but she made it a point to have a meal on the table. We talked about school, homework and other events going on in the world. Even if my father were out of town, the two of us would always have breakfast and dinner together.
Today, this may not always be possible as we have gotten so busy. My point here is to make it happen as often as you can. It is not so much about the food….we have so many choices and resources today but about the sharing.
Device Free Family Meal
A place setting has never included a phone! It is not beside the fork or the spoon.
Why not have a basket where every family member (yes, this includes the parents) places their device? Don’t forget to turn the phones to silent mode and be with the one(s) you are with at the moment. Make eye contact. Listen. Make and start conversations.
I promise, you will cherish these moments as will your children.
