correct way to eat cherries

Life is a bowl of cherries- as long as you know where to put the pits

author unknown

I know it is summer when I walk into the grocery store and the first thing I see are the cherries.

I absolutely love them.

They also brighten any table setting or spread that you are preparing for your guests.

Cherries also make your charcuterie boards more interesting.

Don’t avoid serving this beautiful fruit because they have pits.

Keep reading to learn about the etiquette of serving and eating cherries.

Etiquette of Serving Cherries to Your Guests

When serving cherries to your guests, it is important to provide a convenient and discreet way for them to dispose of the pits.

Where to Put the Cherry Pits

  • Small Bowl or Plate: Place a small bowl or plate beside the serving dish of the cherries. This will be a designated place for guests to discard their cherry pits. Make sure it’s clearly visible and easily accessible (see photo).
  • Side Plate: If you’re serving cherries as part of a larger spread/meal, each guest can use their own side or dinner plate to collect the pits.

Remember to communicate the designated pit disposal method to your guests to ensure everyone is aware of how to handle the pits.

Eating Cherries

  • To eat a cherry, place the cherry (not the stem) into your mouth.
  • Eat around the pit.
  • Once finished, discreetly place the pit into your hand and place into the bowl or vessel provided by your host. If you are served cherries as part of a seated meal (dinner table), place the pit on your plate.
