How to Get Testimonials When You Are First Starting Out

Today I am sharing the what, when and how of getting testimonials when you are first starting your business teaching manners to children.

Let’s talk about why you need testimonials.  Testimonials allow for your community to speak on your behalf.  You need social proof of who you are.

Having testimonials gives your potential client the opportunity to know, like and trust you. Parents, teachers and organizations need to see what it is like having you teach their children manners.  They need to know what it is like doing business with you.

Did You Know….

  • You don’t have to have “client” reviews.  When you are first starting out, you can include testimonials from those that know you. For example, your daughter’s teacher, or a former employer or a peer.
  • You don’t have to use a testimonial verbatim.  You can shorten it or use the most relevant sentences.
  • If you have a website, you do not need to have a dedicated testimonial page. You can use testimonials throughout the site or on your Facebook page or other social media channels.

What Types of Testimonials Do You Need?

Ideally, you need testimonials from:

Parents:  When you provide private instructions or when their children are in a class of yours, ask them about their experience.

Educators: As you provide school assemblies, classroom programs or after school programs, ask for testimonials.

Troops: Girl Scout programs are thrilled to have etiquette experts come and speak to their troop.  You can ask parents for testimonials or troop leaders.

Peers:  Look for those individuals that know you and are well-respected in the community.

What Should Testimonials Say About an Etiquette Expert?

When requesting a testimonial, ask them to write about:

  • Their child’s experience
  • Your teaching style
  • How organized you are
  • How engaging you were
  • How much the children learned and are now using at home or in the classroom
